Saturday morning cartoons that starred live-action comedians

Sometimes as a kid, when I was watching Saturday morning cartoons, I happened to come across little short shows that featured comedy teams from the past, or comedians from the present.  I thought this was an odd phenomenon – having late night comedians appear in materials that were well-toned-down for the Cap’n Crunch set – but here’s some examples, just to give everybody an opportunity to have a little laugh and put a smile on their face.

THE ABBOTT AND COSTELLO SHOW

This 1960’s syndicated series featured new animated adventures of the comedy duo, and was co-produced by Hanna-Barbera with RKO Studios.  Bud Abbott even provided his own voice for the series, while Stan Irwin did the voice for Lou Costello.  And as it is a 1960’s-era Hanna-Barbera series, it’s full of Hoyt Curtin jazzy music.

THE NEW 3 STOOGES

Produced in the 1960’s by independent Cambria Films, this iteration of the Three Stooges featured Moe Howard, Larry Fine and “Curly-Joe” DeRita in both animated and live-action episodes.

THE COMPLETELY MENTAL MISADVENTURES OF ED GRIMLEY

Yep, Martin Short provided his voice and likeness to his legendary SCTV/Saturday Night Live character, I must say.  This ran for about one year on NBC back in I think 1988.

LAUREL AND HARDY

Now both of these loveable characters had long since passed on, but that didn’t stop Larry Harmon from creating an animated series.  He did have to make one subtle change, though – the Oliver Hardy character NEVER says “Here’s another fine mess you’ve gotten us into” in the cartoon series, instead he says “Here’s another NICE mess you’ve gotten us into.”  Copyright, copyright…

WILL THE REAL JERRY LEWIS PLEASE SIT DOWN?

This was completely awful.  David Lander, prior to his starmaking turn on Laverne and Shirley, voice Jerry Lewis – er, several of Jerry Lewis’ characters from Jerry Lewis’ movies – and it became a half-hour cartoon in the late 1960’s.  This was such a stinker, I don’t even think anybody in France would say it was genius work.

Just thought I’d share a few quickies with you, if for no other reason than to have everybody smile.  Enjoy the day!
