K-Chuck Radio: The Vanda and Young Songbook

For those of you who realized that MTV gave up showing music videos years ago, and whose MTV Video Music Awards featured artists no one has ever heard (besides, MTV shows more episodes of Catfish than they do music videos anyway), I wanted to share something different with you.

Today’s K-Chuck Radio blast features the songwriting and producing talents of Harry Vanda and George Young.  I know, you’ve never heard of Harry Vanda and George Young either.  But yes you have.  You’ve heard their songwriting and producing skills on pop and rock hits that span nearly three decades of enjoyment.  Their songs range from kick-ass rock to bouncy pop, from infectious disco to three-movement symphonies.

And yes, we’ve got them right here on K-Chuck Radio, including…

THE EASYBEATS
She’s So Fine

Harry Vanda was the lead guitarist for the Easybeats, and his collaboration with George Young produced many of the Aussie band’s international hits, including this early hit.

THE EASYBEATS
Friday On My Mind

Of course, if we’re talking the Easybeats, you have to acknowledge their biggest worldwide hit.  Yes, this one.

AC/DC
It’s A Long Way To The Top

In addition to being prolific songwriters, Vanda and Young also produced dozens of recordings for AC/DC, including this breakthrough track.

STEVIE WRIGHT
Evie (Parts 1, 2, 3)

Former Easybeats lead singer Stevie Wright had an international hit with this Vanda-Young song, which holds the record for the longest running time for any single to hit #1 on an international pop chart.  Yeah, the original single clocks in at nearly 11 minutes.

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

Yes, I know, I know, AC/DC recorded this song first, and Vanda and Young produced that version.  But this is one of those instances where someone else took that version – and made it a helluva lot better.   You gotta believe me on this.

INXS with JIMMY BARNES
Good Times

You might know this track as the theme music for the film The Lost Boys; it’s also a rare collaboration between Michael Hutchence of InXs and Cold Chisel frontman Jimmy Barnes.

FLASH AND THE PAN
Hey! St. Peter

Another multi-movement hit for Vanda and Young, this was their side band when they weren’t writing and producing for other artists.  Complete with a couple of false endings, too…

JOHN PAUL YOUNG
Love Is In The Air

Vanda and Young produced this track by creating a looped drum track, and allowing the refrain to build over and over again through rising crescendos.  Nice.

CHEETAH
Spend The Night

The Hammond sisters surely benefited from Vanda and Young’s production and orchestration of this rock ballad; it became the duo’s biggest international hit.

THE BAY CITY ROLLERS
Yesterday’s Hero

Yes, the Bay City Rollers could rock and roll.  Especially when they had a Vanda-Young track to work with.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
Can’t Stop Myself From Loving You

And if I have an excuse to play this goofy track – which was another Vanda-Young production – then heck yeah I’m going to play it.  Because it was certainly better than whatever won the MTV Video of the Year for 2016.

Right here for you, kick-ass great songs on the blog post that plays more music videos in one post than MTV does in an entire month … K-Chuck Radio!!
