It’s the late 1960’s, early 1970’s. There’s a sweet, frothy pop sound with cutesy sing-along lyrics that may or may not have some double entendre to it.
That’s bubblegum pop music. So grab a few wads and put them between your cheek and gums… and enjoy this collection of super-sweet bubblegum pop. Including…
Sakkarin was one of the many aliases used by British record producer Jonathan King. While he did have his own hit with “Everyone’s Gone to the Moon,” he was also well-versed in releasing these novelty knock-off groups. And you gotta love this Top of the Pops performance with the studio audience. Especially that one girl about a minute into the video who notices herself on the monitor and says, “That’s me!”
Can’t Stop Myself From Loving You
I’ve previously played the William Shakespeare pop version of this Vanda & Young track; Canadian group Octavian had a hit with this song as well.
BRIGHTER SIDE OF DARKNESS
Yes, it’s devoid of capital letters. Don’t ask me why. But I’m wondering what that “love jones” was all over the lead singer’s homework. I’m just not sure I want to know.
THE DeFRANCO FAMILY feat. TONY DeFRANCO
Heartbeat (It’s a Lovebeat)
Yes, this group follows the formula. Five singers, the youngest one is positioned as the lead singer. The melody is nice and frothy and sweet. If these guys had another hit in their catalog, I’m not sure where it went.
THE SUGAR SHOPPE
I’ve posted music by the Sugar Shoppe in the past. They had a few sunshine and bubblegum pop hits… and one of their members, Victor Garber, later found a decent career in TV and in movies.
Back in the 1970’s, there were really only two ways to enjoy the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. One was to listen to Wendy Carlos’ “Switched-on Bach” album, and the other was to groove to this bubblegum smash by studio group Apollo 100.
This was the original instrumental that mixed the Moog synthesizer with a Hammond organ and some very faint snare drums.
And here’s a remake of the previous piece of bubblegum pop. I’m not sure about this video, though… I can say this. Either this is the worst dance routine this side of Prancercise… or the film director was seriously infatuated with those tight star-spangled blouses. Not sure…
Yeah, this track really has a bubblegum groove to it. These guys are about as cutting-edge as felt.
Okay kids, this splash of bubblegum sweetness should get you through even the stickiest of days. Have a great one, right here on K-Chuck Radio!!
