I’ve participated in almost every Trivial Bowl, the Capital District’s preeminent team trivia championship. My Street Academy trivia team has claimed Trivia Bowls III and VI, for which my team became only the second of three trivia teams to claim the coveted trophy multiple times (Lynch’s Mob and Stern Fans also claimed the trophy more than once).
The traditions have developed over the years … trivia host Kevin Baker will announce all the squads, saving my team name for one of the last listed – just so that there can be a nice loud chorus of boos and jeers and catcalls. Hey, if you’re booing, you’re showing respect to someone who can claim that championship right out from under you.
First off, here’s the official announcement for Trivia Bowl.
It’s official!!!….TRIVIA BOWL XII
Saturday, February 6th, 2016, 1pm
Wolf’s 1-11 on Wolf Road in Colonie
Limited space available, it’s going to be a tough ticket.
And we must finally invoke the “Disbanded Championship
Team” rule….If you’ve won a Trivia Bowl in the past but
no longer actively compete in any TNL games, we won’t have
room for your reunion squad, sorry…..
So what does this mean?
No longer does winning championship automatically guarantee you a berth in the game. Over the years, teams that have won the trophy have drifted to the four winds, only to reunite for the February classic.
But with the host location (Wolf’s 1-11 in Colonie) having some tight space requirements, there can’t be 40 trivia teams in the championship any more, lest some teams play outdoors in winter weather.
Plus, I would imagine that the at-large or “invitational” bids will also be reduced. This could indeed make for a more competitive championship.
Of course, as far as I’m concerned, it will make for a more fun competition as well. I don’t have to worry about losing my automatic bid, as I’ve recently been part of a Wednesday night game at Graney’s Stout. So the Street Academy – two-time winners of Trivia Bowl – will be back, bay bee.
Of course there will be an announcement in the coming days of teams participating in the February Classic. As soon as that list is made available, I will list those teams in this blog as well.
This is going to be good.
I can feel it.
