K-Chuck Radio: I need some sweet Sunshine Pop

There’s something special about “sunshine pop” – the music that just makes you feel good, it has an amazingly catchy melody, and the lyrics can be about anything – childhood games, allusions to history, wry lyrics with a dulcet hint of happiness.

So even though this weekend we must deal with rain and storms and gloominess… I hope this batch of sunshine pop songs help you get through with a smile on your face.

Let’s start the playlist … shall we?

THE PEARLS
You Came, You Saw, You Conquered

I barely remember this song as a Ronettes “Wall of Sound” super-production.  So it’s really interesting to hear this stripped-down version by the Pearls.

HOBBY HORSE
Summertime, Summertime

Yes, this is the remake of the old 1950’s song by the Jamies.  But did you know that one of the members of this one-hit wonder group was 1970’s hit singer Mary Hopkin?  Yep, the woman who sang “Those Were The Days” and “Goodbye” also lent her voice to this summery track.

JOHNNY JOHNSON AND THE BANDWAGON
Blame It On the Pony Express

I’ve played this song on K-Chuck Radio before, but it still brings a big fat goofy singalong smile to my face every time I hear it.

MAMA CASS ELLIOT
Easy Come, Easy Go

I’m so used to the Bobby Sherman version of this song, yet I was completely blown away by Cass Elliot’s take on this track.  Blown away in a good way.

SOMEBODY’S IMAGE
Hide and Seek

This song is barely two minutes long.  It’s like the perfect little compact tiny tune.

THE OSMONDS
Love Me For A Reason

Okay, sit down and relax.  The Osmonds had a slew of amazing Top 40 recordings, if you can get past the bubblegum fluff of “One Bad Apple.”  Just remember this – the same Muscle Shoals studio group that produced all those great R&B classics also worked with the Osmonds.  So you can imagine this track as a Muscle Schoals track with the Osmonds as guest vocalists, if you want to.

BUTTERSCOTCH
Don’t You Know (She Said Hello)

I can just imagine what a music video for this song would emulate… probably someone dancing down the street, just imagining that first kiss from the most beautiful girl in the world…

BO DONALDSON AND THE HEYWOODS
Who Do You Think You Are?

Yeah, it would have been really easy to put on “Billy, Don’t Be A Hero” and get that song stuck in your brains.  This was the Heywoods’ follow-up song, a cover of a British hit by Candlewick Green that became the Heywoods’ “other” hit.

THE SUGAR SHOPPE
The Attitude

If I told you that actor Victor Garber was one of the members of this 1960’s sunshine pop group… by now you should believe me when I say these things.

THE PEPPERMINT RAINBOW
Will You Be Staying After Sunday?

I’ve featured this song before on K-Chuck Radio… but come on, this is just an amazing sunshine pop track and it sounds awesome in stereo…

So it’s not gloomy and rainy out today… not with this arsenal of sunshine pop in your web brower.

Right here… on your source for the best music ever … K-Chuck Radio!!
